Medical Weight Loss Part 2

What is the biggest hurdle to weight loss?

This will be a different answer for most people but generally will fall in the following:

  • Lack of motivation - I want to lose weight but am depressed about the weight I currently carry.  Lack of motivation can come from boredom, stress, burnout, anxiety, lack of clear goals.

TCS can help you set realistic goals, understand how to practice self care and how to ask for help.

  • Eating too many calories - Consuming too many calories may cause weight gain and also increase your risk for cancer and other chronic health problems.

Although TCS does not put people on a specific calorie intake we will advise what calorie intake is approrpiate for your goals.  Also provide you useful tools to assist you with your goals.

  • Focusing on the scale numbers - Maintaing a healthy weight is not necessarily a scale number as there are many factors in what is a proper weight for you not just what a text book says is average.

Although stepping on a scale to check your weight to meet certain goals is necessary it is not an all inclusive focus.  TCS does not only look at the weight of a person but the overall BMI of a person.  We will help you understand how to reach your goals without the worry of the scale.

  • Not wanting to exercise or execising too much

TCS can help you understand the importance of what exercise provides.  Can you lose weight without exercising - yes.  Take my own experience.  I have lost over 60 lbs and not execised at all.  However this is not advisable as you do lose muscle mass.  So it is important to understand that exercising may help minimize the amount of lean mass you lose, also increase fat loss and prevent your metabolism from slowing down.  However, overexercising can also cause problems.  Overexecising is unsustainable in the long term for most people and can lead to stress.  It also may negatively impact your endocrine hormones whcih help regulate functions throughout the body.  Trying to force your body to burn more calories by overexercising is neither effective nor healthy.

  • Making Bad Food Choices - Try to choose a combination of nutritious, minimally processed foods.  Choose fruits and vegetables when possible.  Alot of "Diet" foods are packed with sugar to improve their taste, which can produce the opposite effect.

TCS can help you understand healthy eating.  However, we do not believe healthy eating cuts out any foods.  All foods are on the table it is just when and how much you consume of those foods.  Things like not eating enough protein are very important while trying to lose weight.  Protein has been shown to reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness, maintain or increase metabolism and protect muscle mass.  Not eating enough fiber is also something that may be hurting your weight loss efforts.  Soluble fiber helps reduce appetite by forming a gel that holds water and this gel moves slowly through your digestive tract, making you feel full.

  • Eating when you are not hungry

TCS will help you understand to learn to listen to your body.  Eat only when you are hungry.  Dont eat because you have a learned habit of eating 3 meals a day and also snacks.  That leads to weight gain and drop in metabolism.  Your body knows when it needs fuel - learn to listen.

  • Having unrealistic expectations and giving up

TCS will help you set realistic weight loss goals to keep you motivated.  However, not meeting a goal is not failure.  It means we need to look at things differently and possibly restructure our plan.  The goal is permanent life style changes with healing of body, mind and spirit.

  • Drinking sugary beverages

TCS is not saying you can not have a sugary beverage.  However, reducing your intake of those drinks (including fruit juices) is overall a healthy choice.  Sugary drinks can lead to weight gain and adverse health conditions.  If you look at the calories in some of the drinks you consume - you may notice that you are drinking your average daily calorie intake in drinks alone which do not affect the appetite centers in your brain the same way calories from solid foods do.  Drinking enough water is one way of helping to lose weight and it is easy.  Proper hydration is a vital part of weight loss.  Water also helps you to feel fuller for longer after meals.  Drinking water also helps keep a normal temperature, lubricate and cushion joints, protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues,  boosts skin health, delivers oxygen throught the body, flushes body waste, prevents kidney damage, promotes urinary health and helps maintain blood pressure.

  • Lack of proper sleep

TCS can help you understand that not getting enough sleep can counteract your efforts to lose weight.  Creating a routine around your bedtime to ensure you get enough sleep is important.  Set a general sleep and wake time and stick to it.
